The connections between Hamburg and India date back to the 16th century. India quickly gained in importance as a trading partner, especially in shipping - for example with the Hamburg-Kolkata-Line, which was founded in 1888 and later taken over by the German HAPAG shipping company. Few people know that today’s Indian National Anthem "Jana Gana Mana" was first performed in September 1942 in Hamburg's Hotel Atlantic. The reason for this was the foundation of the Indo-German Society Hamburg. At this time, India was still a British Crown Colony.

Indo-German relations continue to develop dynamically and this full potential is far from being tapped. The City of Hamburg has recognised this dynamic and intends to further intensify existing economic relations and cooperations in science, research, society and culture.
